Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a 20th Century Black South African hero who fought against the White oppressive, apartheid regime in South African for which he was imprisoned for more than a quarter of a century. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela dedicated his life to fighting against White and Black domination. He cherished the ideals of a democratic and free society, and spoke of a “Rainbow Nation” in which all persons live together in harmony with equal opportunities. A description that can be used to define Leicester’s richly cosmopolitan society.
Referred to by some as ‘President of the World’ Nelson Mandela’s legacy challenges all nations to live by his ideals, thereby creating a safer and just world, where current and future generations are assured of their inalienable right to human dignity.
